Cody Cowell is a native born and raised in Manhattan Beach, CA, the youngest of 3 brothers. He attended Meadows, Foster A Begg middle school and graduated from Mira Costa high school. Cody played volleyball for Mira Costa High School and had a very successful high school career there with the team going undefeated in his Sophomore AND Junior seasons and in his Senior season they were the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) champions.
Upon graduation Cody coached the Mira Costa JV team to an undefeated season and then went on to coach at El Segundo High school and club to one of their winningest seasons.
Cody then went on to El Camino College, made the team as the “go to” outside hitter and was made captain. Unfortunately he was not able to play due to an injury incurred in the pre-season.
After the injury in indoor Cody focused on Beach Volleyball as it is relatively easier on the body. He received my CBVA AAA rating shortly thereafter and decided to play Pro Beach Volleyball. The first tour that Cody played on was the EVA ( Eastern Volleyball Association ). He won 3 pro tournaments on that circuit.
Cody qualified in his first AVP event, The Manhattan Beach Open in his home town and won his first main draw match on center court by upsetting the 7th ranked pro team. He went on to play 14 AVP Tournaments over 8 seasons on the Tour.
Cody has also competed in 11 CBVA Coed Open Beach Volleyball tournaments, garnering 9 – 1st place finishes going undefeated for 9 straight first place finishes in a row followed by 2 second place finishes making his the #1 Coed Open Men’s Player that season. A feat that is very difficult to achieve playing in the heart of the Beach Volleyball World!
Unfortunately, injuries took Cody out early in his career and that’s how he got into Beach and Indoor volleyball coaching. He simply wasn’t ready to walk away from the sport and felt he had so much to offer people who wanted to improve on all levels of the game and he has been coaching ever since.
Over the years Cody has coached Pro and Amateur single players, doubles teams and groups from America, Japan, China, Australia, Scandinavia and England in Manhattan Beach.
Cody’s son, Colton, is currently a sophomore playing for the University of Hawaii Indoor Men’s Volleyball team and followed in his father’s footsteps by playing the AVP Hermosa Tournament this summer. His daughter, Chandler, is committed to play for the St. Mary’s Gaels Beach Volleyball team.
